Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history by winning the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday, December 12. He is now the youngest player ever to hold this title. Additionally, Gukesh is the second Indian to become a world champion in chess, following Viswanathan Anand. He secured the championship by defeating China’s Ding Liren in the crucial 14th game.
In the final match of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, Ding Liren played with the white pieces while Gukesh played with black. The game was on track for a tiebreaker when Ding Liren lost focus during the 53rd move and made an error. The sharp-minded D Gukesh seized the opportunity and did not allow Liren to recover, ultimately winning the match against last year’s champion. Gukesh is now the 18th world champion in the history of the World Chess Championship.
D Gukesh is from Chennai, where he was born as Dommaraju Gukesh on May 7, 2006. He began his chess journey at the age of 7, initially receiving coaching from Bhaskar Nagaiya, who is also an international chess player. Later, Gukesh was mentored by the legendary Vishwanathan Anand, who provided him with valuable insights into the game. Currently, Gukesh trains at the Anand Chess Academy (WACA).

Gukesh’s father works as a doctor, while his mother is a microbiologist. He developed a love for chess during his school years and quickly made a name for himself with his impressive performances. At just 17, Gukesh won the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, making him the youngest player to achieve this feat. This year, the Chess Olympiad took place in Budapest from September 10 to 23, where India triumphed in both the men’s and women’s categories. In the open category, Gukesh secured the final game, leading India to victory.
