The death toll rose to 13 and more than 101 people have been rescued by the Indian Coast Guard so far.
A video of a boat accident in Mumbai has gone viral online, in which a boat is seen colliding with a speedboat.. The tragic incident has resulted in 13 fatalities, with more than 80 people rescued by the Indian Coast Guard to date. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that 85 passengers, including the driver of the Nikalmal boat, were en route to the Elephanta Caves in Mumbai, having started their journey around 3:15 PM.
Nosenah Pravakta shared on X that an Indian Nose Boat experienced engine failure while in Mumbai port, leading to a collision with a passenger boat that subsequently capsized.
Elephanta Island is situated approximately 11 km east of the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Indian Nose Boats and Tatarshak Bal have initiated a search and rescue operation in the area, deploying 11 Nose Boats, three Marine Police Boats, and one Tatarshak Boat.
Officials indicated that local police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port authorities, and other local officials have also contributed to the rescue efforts. Additionally, four helicopters have been dispatched to assist.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow on May 24, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of many lives due to the collision between a passenger boat and an Indian ship in Mumbai Harbour. The injured, including civilians from both vessels, are receiving immediate medical attention.”
He added, “My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims. A search and rescue operation is ongoing to locate the missing persons, utilizing Indian Nose and Tasmanian resources, with many organizations involved.”
The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour, are renowned for their ancient rock-cut architecture and intricate carvings. These caves, constructed between the 5th and 7th centuries, showcase the remarkable skill of early Indian sculptors and hold significant Hindu and Buddhist heritage.
